Welcome to this weeks Irregular Update which is shorter than usual.
This weeks article revolves around a subject I have not covered previously; it involves wine and gambling. Roulette was invented by the French in the 18th century, and legend has it, that a particularly deadly form of the game was invented by the Russians, in the 19th century. “Russian Roulette” was first written up in the press in the 20th century. The ball went back into the French court, and in the 20th century they came up with a new version, which you are reading about in the 21st Century. The new version is called “Wine Roulette.” Its is a costly game with the occasional big win, but there are many losers too. Read all about it here.
Comments and feedback continues to be posted on many of the past articles and snippets, so it is worthwhile going back and having a look at the home page to see which stories have gained the most interest.
If you are planning or involved in a wine tasting event, please send me the details (well in advance) and I will post a notice of the event on the home page. A couple of events have already been posted.
There will be no Irregular Update next week as I am working on two things. The first is a Feature Story on Australia's most awarded winemaker. I went to a dinner with him last week that featured his wines, and the next day did an extensive interview with him. This story should be a winner and will be posted the week after next. I also need to lock in plans and appointments for my September South Aust Tour Diary Trip, which is rapidly approaching.
Some new tasting notes have been posted. Read them here.
Don't forget, if you haven't done so already, please put your free entry into the guessing competition. The Tasting Note entry page has now received over 95,500 hits since TORBWine was launched and it's anyone's guess when the magic 100,000 visits will be reached. (There have been hundreds of thousands of actual tasting note searches, as many people search for more than one wine.) So, to celebrate and have a bit of fun, the person who guesses the closest date will win a bottle of very presentable Oz wine from my cellar. Only one entry per person will be accepted. Click here to enter.
The News section has been quieter than normal this week, possibly something to do with the US summer holidays. Some of the stories of possible interest include:
Those stories and more can be found here.
This week quote: ""Wine.... offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than possibly any other purely sensory thing which may be purchased." - Ernest Hemingway
Until until the week after next.... Cheers! Ric
