Welcome to the second ever Special Edition of the Irregular Update. Readers may remember that last week I said there would be no Irregular Update this week, as I was working on a feature story as well as the plan for my upcoming trip. So what is so dang fire important that made me want to drop everything, write an unscheduled story, and get it out immediately? The answer is Seppeltsfield!

Seppeltsfield is the jewel in the Barossa Crown, and probably the most historically significant winery in Australia today. In June 2006, after Fosters took over Southcorp, they announced they wanted to sell the asset, a move that shocked and worried many Australian wine lovers. During that time, there was much speculation about potential buyers, but that's all it was, idle speculation. That was until last week when a local South Australian newspaper reported that the sale was close to being finalised. Fosters refuse to confirm or deny the story, so it was odds on that it was going to happen. I did some behind-the-scenes digging and was able to unofficially find out who was behind the purchase. As soon as the sale was made public, I contacted Nathan Waks of Kilikanoon and interviewed him to get the inside low-down on the sale. The result is this article titled "A New Beginning for an Historic Icon."

The News section has been back to normal this week. Some of the stories of possible interest include:

  • French wine: The art of making less

  • Evans & Tate seals Oz distribution with McWilliam’s

  • Chinese wine consumers at mercy of dodgy producers

  • A bumper harvest, but growing demand means the champagne is running out

  • A box of wine with your supermarket sandwich?

  • Wine retailer cries double standards

  • Barossa wine complex sold

  • Losses continue as McGuigan Simeon weathers "perfect storm"

  • ANZ appoints receivers to Evans & Tate

Those stories and more can be found here.

Until regular transmission resumes next week....  Cheers!

Ric
