Mike Press 2005 Merlot Aug 08 is sealed under screwcap. The bouquet was dominated by varnished notes, but did not seem oxidised. The silky tannins provide a soft consistency to this almost lean, but seamless wine. Initially upon opening, the palate exhibited a green, unripe streak through the mid-mid-palate together with coffee oak, and herbs on the finish. It improved markedly as it opened over a few hours to reveal sweet ripe fruit flavours, and whilst it was easy drinking and uncomplicated, this particular bottle could not have won two gold medals in a pink fit. Although it was possibly, and I say possibly a defective bottle, I could not pick up any obvious defect. Rated as Acceptable with *** for value.
