Tim Adams 2006 Aberfeldy Aug 08 sells for $44 at cellar door and is sealed under screwcap. When the wine was first opened there was the overpowering impression of fresh timber (not oak), medicinal herbs, a hint of spice, and some sweet fruit below; it was very different to what I expected. As the wine opened, the bouquet changed significantly. The pristine fruit is well matched to the fine, unobtrusive, chalky, long, tannins. The palate is initially dominated by black pepper but over time it lessened to reveal blackberry, cinnamon, nutmeg, cherry and dark chocolate; overall the flavour profile is slightly sour with spice. There is significant, but controlled, oak influence and it needs time to be absorbed. An ample-weight, supple wine that is tight, and whilst it is approachable now, if it is going to be consumed young it must be decanted. It seems slightly less ripe and a little more refined than previous vintages. It will be interesting to see how it develops in comparison to its predecessors. Rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value, the rating will improve as the wine enters its peak drinking window between 2012 and 2019.
