Yelland and Pappas 2006 Old Vine Grenache Feb 09

A single vineyard wine from vines that were planed in the 1960’s, it sells for $30 and is sealed under screwcap. The bouquet was spicy, earthy, and showed red fruit below and mint. Upon opening, it showed a little volatility, and although there was only about 30 millimetres taken from the bottle, after eight hours the bottle was showing significant signs of oxidation. That may explain why this bottle/wine did not show all that well.

Powdery tannins combine with fresh acid and strong fruit to form a medium-weight, firm solid wine that seems to have all the components, but they have not meshed together. Its very savoury on the palate, and although the sweet and savoury characters intermingle, the sour, slightly unripe cherry flavour sticks out from the mix. Raspberry and milk chocolate are also found. It finishes clean and with good persistence. Rated as Recommended with ** for value, drink from 2001-2016.
